About

With over 21,000 members in 74 countries, the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) is the leading professional body for scientists, support staff and students in the field of biomedical science.

“I am proud to launch the IBMS Awards and give our members the chance to celebrate excellence in biomedical science across the UK. The ceremony will shine a light on innovative practice, outstanding individuals and teams, and help to raise the profile of our profession.”

IBMS Chief Executive, David Wells

For over 100 years, the IBMS has been dedicated to the promotion, development and delivery of excellence in biomedical science within all aspects of healthcare, and to providing the highest standards of service to patients and the public.

And now with the launch of the Institute of Biomedical Science Awards, the IBMS is developing the perfect platform to champion outstanding biomedical science practice. The awards will recognise the finest in the sector and share their success stories with the wider biomedical community and beyond.

“As President, I am thrilled that the first IBMS Awards will take place during
my tenure. The awards will be an excellent way to share good practice and to celebrate the
profession and the achievements of our members. I can’t wait to see our brightest and best at the ceremony.”

Joanna Andrew, IBMS President

The awards are open to all organisations and individuals active within the biomedical science profession.

Work showcased in the entries for all categories should have taken place between 1 January 2023 and 31 December 2023.

The IBMS Awards will be the most prestigious accolades for the biomedical science profession. Shortlisted and winning organisations and individuals will gain the ultimate recognition for your achievements.

The awards provide a platform to showcase your accomplishments to the wider biomedical science community and beyond. Winners will benefit from extensive publicity.

Awards recognition and attendance at the ceremony are powerful for building team morale and demonstrating gratitude for the outstanding work of your people.

There is no fee for entries into categories that recognise individuals.

Organisation categories are free of charge for public, third sector and public private partnerships. Entries from private sector organisations are subject to an entry fee of £149 each prior to the early bird entry deadline and £199 thereafter.

  • Read the How to Enter and the Terms and Conditions sections before completing the relevant category entry forms.

  • Ensure that your answers are as concise as possible and you have stuck to the word counts for each answer using the template entry form.

  • If you are entering multiple categories please make sure that the correct entry form is used for each category, ensuring that you have tailored the entry specifically to each category.

  • Please ensure you pay particular attention to all questions, in order for your entry to be accepted for judging. Blank answers will attract a score of zero from the judges.

  • Start early. The entries received early will be reviewed by the awards team and will allow us to flag up any further requirements prior to the entry deadline.

  • Showcase the key strengths of your submission as concisely as possible to land your message – make use of bullet points. Explain what is unique or innovative about your entry, how important it is, or the scale of the challenges that had to be overcome.

  • Include one pdf of supporting documents – this can be made up of charts or diagrams to support your answers and/or testimonials.

  • Upload supporting photos. Photos are invaluable to the submission as they will be used to represent your entry at the awards ceremony and in the winners write up, should your entry be successful. Think about which images bring your entry to life. We ask for a minimum of one high resolution image and you can include a link to videos to support your entry within your supporting document.
  • Each entry will be judged on the information provided in the category entry form.

  • The judges will look for demonstrable evidence that you have produced work worthy of an award.

  • Judging of organisational categories will aim to recognise those that have raised the bar in biomedical science practice through innovation, technology, sustainability, ethics, people development, leadership and management, creativity and effectiveness.

  • Judging of individual categories will aim to recognise those who have delivered exceptional work, demonstrating commitment to their organisations and the profession, creativity, effectiveness and their impact on their organisations and others.
  • Each entry will be subject to a rigorous two-stage judging process. Our esteemed panel of judges will mark each category individually before convening for a second stage judging day during which shortlisted and winning entries will be debated and agreed upon.

  • Each entry will be judge on the information provided in the Category Entry Form during the online entry process.

  • Entries will be judged against our published judging criteria.

  • Incomplete or incorrectly submitted entries will be rejected.

  • The shortlist will be announced in April 2024 across IBMS digital communications and social media channels including The Biomedical Scientist magazine.

The entry must qualify for the period of eligibility as indicated within each category judging criteria.

The written part of the submission must be completed on the category entry form template (minimum point size 10). Supporting documents must be no longer than five A4 pages.
